A rare oil portrait of Mahatma Gandhi fetches a staggering price far exceeding expectations, signaling collectors' interest in cultural heritage.
A rare oil portrait of Mahatma Gandhi has just been sold at auction in London for an impressive £152,800 ($204,648), surpassing Bonhams' initial estimate of £50,000-£70,000. Painted by British artist Clare Leighton during Gandhi's visit to London in 1931, this piece is considered to be the only oil portrait for which Gandhi sat. The painting captures Gandhi, who is revered as the "father of the nation" in India, during a pivotal time when he was participating in the second Round Table conference aimed at negotiating India's self-governance. Leighton, one of the few artists allowed to spend time with Gandhi, sketched him multiple times, creating this significant work that has remained in her family since her death in 1989. As of now, the identity of the buyer remains undisclosed, and it's unclear if the artwork will be displayed publicly.
