In brief
The International Criminal Court has initiated an external investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan. This comes amidst his efforts to seek arrest warrants for high-profile leaders involved in the Gaza conflict.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has announced an independent investigation into serious allegations of sexual misconduct involving its chief prosecutor, Karim Khan. The inquiry, aimed at maintaining an unbiased and fair process, follows accusations made against Khan, who is widely recognized for pursuing arrest warrants against high-ranking officials from Israel and Hamas regarding their actions in the ongoing Gaza conflict. In a statement released on Monday, Paivi Kaukoranta, the president of the assembly of states parties which oversees the ICC, confirmed that the investigation would be conducted by an external entity. This measure was taken to ensure the integrity and impartiality of the review. Khan himself acknowledged the investigation, stating that he believed transparency was necessary and had requested that his deputies assume responsibility for internal matters related to the allegations. The initial claims against Khan emerged in October, when a female colleague accused him of harassment, allegations he firmly denied. Further reports indicated Khan attempted to suppress the claims, a point he has also contested. Following a consultation with the alleged victim, Kaukoranta stated that any forthcoming inquiry would require consent from the person reporting the misconduct. However, after discussions, it was determined that the ICC was not prepared to move forward.Days later, Khan took to social media, asserting that the matter had previously been deemed "closed" without any formal investigation due to the absence of a complaint, while alleging that the accusations had emerged from a campaign of misinformation. As the ICC grapples with this challenging situation, the focus remains on safeguarding the integrity and accountability of its operations amidst these serious charges.
