In brief
A tragic bridge collapse in Brazil has left four dead and several missing while prompting urgent concerns over potential water contamination due to hazardous materials spilled into the river.
A catastrophic bridge collapse in northern Brazil this past weekend has heightened concerns over potential environmental hazards as lorries carrying toxic chemicals plunged into the river below. The incident occurred when the central span of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, a critical connection between the Tocantins and Maranhão states, gave way on Sunday afternoon. Tragically, four lives were lost, including a female truck driver and an 11-year-old girl, while rescue efforts continue for more than ten individuals reported missing. The dramatic event was captured on video by local councillor Elias Junior, who had documented cracks on the structure shortly before the incident. In shock, he remarked he never anticipated a collapse would occur during his visit. The bridge, which has stood since the 1960s, collapsed alongside eight vehicles, including three lorries filled with thousands of liters of pesticides and sulphuric acid. Immediate concerns have been raised regarding the extent of chemical leakage into the Tocantins river, with diving operations suspended as authorities assess the situation. Residents in nearby cities, Estreito and Aguiarnopolis, have been warned against collecting water from the river due to contamination fears.Rescue operations are currently underway using boats, with the fire service reporting that one individual was rescued from the water alive on Sunday. The bridge's structural failure exemplifies a dire need for infrastructure assessment and investment, especially considering its vital role as a main thoroughfare for the region.
