In brief

A violent neo-Nazi group known as the Last Wave of Defense has been implicated in arson attacks against facilities for asylum seekers in Germany, resulting in the arrest of five teenagers aged 14 to 18. Authorities express alarm over the rising trend of youth involvement in right-wing extremist terrorism.

In a disturbing development, German authorities have arrested five teenagers linked to a neo-Nazi group that has carried out violent anti-immigrant actions. The group, called the Last Wave of Defense, was allegedly responsible for targeting buildings that house asylum seekers, reflecting a broader surge in politically motivated crimes within the nation—the highest in nearly a generation.During an early-morning raid on Wednesday, federal prosecutors reported that the suspects, who are all male and aged between 14 and 18, were apprehended across three states in eastern and central Germany. The group, founded just last year, has raised concerns due to the involvement of minors in serious criminal activities. Authorities revealed that three of those arrested are regarded as leading members of the organization.Prosecutors have charged two of the teenagers with attempted murder and arson, as investigations reveal their significant roles within the group. The individuals were only identified by their first names in compliance with Germany's stringent privacy regulations. Prosecutors emphasized that the minors acted with a level of responsibility that warrants serious legal consequences. In addition to the arrests, officials conducted searches at 13 locations across four provinces, marking the culmination of a months-long investigation that mobilized over 220 police officers. Germany's Justice Minister, Stefanie Hubig, articulated her alarm at the ages of the suspects, illustrating an unsettling trend in the rise of far-right extremist ideologies among the youth. As investigations remain ongoing, authorities continue to address the pressing issue of domestic terrorism and youth recruitment within extremist organizations, urging society to confront and combat the undercurrents of hate that endanger communal harmony.
