In brief
A pair of hikers exploring the Krkonose Mountains made a significant discovery in early February when they encountered what appeared to be an aluminum can. Upon inspection, they uncovered a remarkable collection of 598 gold coins meticulously arranged in cloth, as confirmed by Miroslav Novak, head of the archaeological department at the Museum of Eastern Bohemia. Additionally, they found a metal box filled with luxury items such as 16 snuffboxes, bracelets, a comb, a chain, and a powder compact.
The estimated value of the gold coins alone is about $340,000, while the accompanying artifacts could add a similar amount to their worth. Interestingly, the latest coin from the collection dates back to 1921, indicating the treasure was hidden within the last century, differing from typical archaeological finds in the region. Experts now ponder who might have concealed these valuables and why, as they lead a quest to uncover the story behind the treasure's origin.
