In brief

Mount Lewotobi's recent eruption has profoundly affected nearby villages, sparking evacuation efforts and raising air quality concerns.

At least 10 people have tragically lost their lives following a sudden eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, which occurred in the early hours of Monday in eastern Indonesia. The volcano, situated on Flores Island in East Nusa Tenggara province, erupted just before midnight, sending clouds of ash and streams of lava toward nearby settlements. According to Hadi Wijaya from the Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMG), the volcanic debris impacted villages situated approximately 4km away, leading to significant residential damage.Officials reported destruction across seven villages, with flames engulfing homes and infrastructure due to the volcanic activity. In light of these developments, PVMG promptly elevated the volcano's alert status to the highest level, advising residents to evacuate a 7km radius around the volcano. "We have begun relocating residents this morning to villages approximately 20km away from the crater," remarked local official Heronimus Lamawuran during an interview with Reuters.Eyewitness accounts circulate, revealing harrowing scenes of communities blanketed in volcanic ash and panic-stricken residents. Footage shared with the BBC depicts shaking ground and clouds of volcanic material cascading from the volcano, resulting in extensive damage and destruction. Meanwhile, a representative from Indonesia's disaster management agency warned of impending flash floods and cold lava flows as after-effects of the eruption. In an effort to address the crisis, the local government has declared a state of emergency for 58 days, allowing for the deployment of central government aid to assist around 10,000 affected residents. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is recognized as one of the prominent volcanic formations on Flores Island and has demonstrated intermittent volcanic activity since last December. This ongoing unrest has severely impacted the local economy, particularly affecting the livelihoods of farmers whose crops, notably cashew nuts, are now compromised by the overwhelming ash fall.Indonesia's geographic positioning along the Pacific "Ring of Fire" makes it particularly susceptible to volcanic eruptions and seismic events, housing approximately 130 active volcanoes. Many indigenous communities continue to reside close to these volcanoes, drawn by the fertile land that their eruptions often create. As Mount Lewotobi endures an uncertain period of activity, the urgency for support and assistance for the affected communities becomes increasingly paramount.
