In brief
As Russian forces advance in Ukraine, police officer Volodymyr Nikulin recounts his harrowing journey of displacement, personal sacrifice, and unwavering duty to aid his community while surviving relentless assaults.
In the midst of warfare and devastation, one Ukrainian police officer's story encapsulates the resilience of those facing displacement. Volodymyr Nikulin has endured the anguish of relocating due to advancing Russian forces, having left three cities behind since the conflict escalated. His belongings tally up to a battered car riddled with shrapnel, a small sack of clothing, and essential supplies packed in plastic bags. For Nikulin, simplicity is a necessity. Currently residing in Sloviansk, just 15 miles from the frontline, he has settled minimally in a friend’s apartment, often opting to sleep in an office rather than disturb the untouched bedroom. A constant reminder of the unpredictable nature of war is the echo of Russian bombing resonating through the walls, making it clear that another swift departure may be imminent. “Who knows where I’ll be in a few months?” Nikulin pondered, with a determined yet weary demeanor.Known for his light-heartedness amidst turmoil, he refers to his car as “my lucky car,” having relied on it during critical escapes from danger. His journey began in Donetsk back in 2014 when conflict first erupted with Russian-backed separatists. He faced further upheaval during the full-scale invasion in 2022, which forced him from Mariupol and, more recently, Myrnohrad. Nikulin's plight mirrors that of numerous Ukrainians who have watched their homes crumbled, neighborhoods destroyed, and loved ones lost amid an ongoing battle. However, his role as a police officer has positioned him on the frontlines of humanitarian aid, including assisting evacuated journalists to safety, helping them communicate the harsh realities they observed. In a world of chaos, Nikulin’s unwavering spirit and dedication to his duties shine through, representing the tenacity and strength of a community resisting adversity while facing the unknown future of their homeland.
