In brief

Cecilia Sala, an Italian journalist jailed in Iran for 20 days, has been freed and is returning home, thanks to intense diplomatic work, as revealed by the Italian government.

Cecilia Sala, a 29-year-old Italian journalist, has been released after being detained for 20 days in Iran while covering a reporting assignment. The Italian government confirmed on Wednesday that she is aboard a flight returning to Italy. Officials announced, “The plane that is taking journalist Cecilia Sala home took off a few minutes ago from Tehran,” attributing her release to extensive diplomatic and intelligence efforts.Sala was arrested on December 19 on allegations of violating Iran's laws; however, Iranian authorities did not elaborate on the specifics of the charges against her. Throughout her detention, she remained in isolation with limited amenities, and a close family associate reported that she endured constant light and was given only two blankets.Upon receiving the news of her freedom, Sala's partner, Daniele Raineri, expressed immense relief after speaking with her, saying, “I am free.” Raineri noted that the waiting period was painfully long, but he commended the Italian government's exceptional effort in securing her release. In a supportive gesture, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reached out to Sala’s parents to inform them of her safe return. As this situation unfolds, the significance of diplomatic channels in securing the freedom of detained journalists has been highlighted.
