Thirteen individuals sustained injuries when a car crashed into a gathering of fans outside the highly anticipated derby match between Espanyol and Barcelona on Thursday. The match, which saw Barcelona claim the La Liga title through a 2-0 victory, experienced a brief delay as officials informed the referee about the situation.
Local police reported that four of the injured were taken to nearby hospitals; fortunately, none of them were in serious condition. Officials reassured the public that the incident posed no danger to spectators inside the stadium.
The driver was apprehended on charges of dangerous driving that resulted in injury. Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media depicted the vehicle recently stopping near some bins before accelerating into the crowd, which had assembled to greet Espanyol's coach.
Emergency services responded swiftly, dispatching ten ambulances to the scene. Among the injuries reported, the most severe was identified as a broken leg.
Salvador Illa, the president of the Government of Catalonia, who was present at the match, commented on the situation, stating, “It was an accident, some people were injured, but not seriously. There are no major incidents to report,” during an interview with Spanish TV channel Movistar Plus.
