Russia unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine in an overwhelming nighttime assault, characterized as one of the most extensive since the onset of the conflict. Ukrainian officials reported that the strikes reached various regions, including parts of western Ukraine that are less frequently targeted. The Ukrainian Air Force indicated a record high in assaults, with 537 aerial vehicles used in a single night, marking a significant escalation in Russia’s military aggressions.Among these launched weaponry were nonlethal decoy drones introduced into the battlefield during the past year, aimed at sabotaging Ukrainian air defenses. Military analysts have noted that the use of such decoys complicates defensive strategies, as Ukraine must deploy its limited air defense missiles to combat a higher number of incoming threats. Despite the scale of the assault, Ukrainian forces managed to intercept approximately 90 percent of the drones, employing electronic jamming to neutralize many. However, the situation proved less favorable concerning the missiles; only about two-thirds were intercepted, revealing vulnerabilities in Ukraine's defenses, particularly against ballistic missiles.Tragically, the strikes had human costs. While there were no confirmed civilian casualties, the Ukrainian Air Force disclosed the death of a pilot tragically lost while attempting to defend against the attack in an American-designed F-16 aircraft.
