NEW YORK (AP) — As we approach the New Year of 2026, a recent AP-NORC poll shows a significant shift in attitudes towards holiday gift-giving among Americans. Most adults now view cash and gift cards as acceptable presents, with many planning a quiet evening rather than a festive celebration.
About 60% of Americans consider cash or gift cards to be an ‘acceptable’ form of holiday gifting, contrasting sharply with their views on secondhand or re-gifted items. Older generations, however, still seem to prefer traditional gift-giving practices as exemplified by Nancy Wyant, 73, who believes in the charm of physical gifts.
Across various states like Iowa, Floridians express mixed feelings about cash gifts. Teresa Pedroza, 55, shows her reluctance, hinting that it somewhat diminishes the excitement of gift exchange, although she accepts the practicality they bring out of convenience.
Sleepy Holidays
With roughly 44% of Americans indicating they won't stay up till midnight this New Year's Eve, the survey showcases a trend where older folk especially prefer a peaceful night over celebratory festivities. This trend seems to extend to relatively younger individuals like 23-year-old Otis Phillips, who simply finds the occasion lacks significance.
Decorations Stretched Beyond the Season
This holiday season, around one-third of surveyed adults admitted they would keep their decorations up beyond New Year’s Day, indicating a desire to cling to the holiday spirit just a little longer.
Christmas with Sports
While many Americans still celebrate Christmas, only a quarter plan to watch sports on the day. Interestingly, this number is notably higher among adults aged 45 or older compared to their younger counterparts.
Gift Giving for Pets
Unconventionally, approximately 30% of U.S. adults are set on treating their pets during the holidays, showcasing the evolving nature of gift-giving in modern family structures.
Ultimately, these findings from the AP-NORC poll highlight a significant cultural evolution in how Americans approach the holiday season, balancing tradition with practicality as they engage with changing values and lifestyles.
