In a significant escalation of diplomatic tensions, Russia has expelled a British diplomat over allegations of espionage. The expulsions mark the continuation of a series of diplomatic spats between the UK and Russia.

According to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the expelled diplomat allegedly provided false information when applying to enter the country and attempted to gather sensitive information during informal economic meetings. This incident has resulted in the revocation of the diplomat's accreditation, requiring him to leave the country within two weeks.

A UK Foreign Office spokesperson labeled the expulsion as complete nonsense and accused Russia of conducting an orchestrated campaign of harassment against British diplomats. Furthermore, the spokesperson emphasized that the UK would not tolerate intimidation of its embassy staff and their families.

The FSB claimed the diplomat engaged in intelligence activities, according to Russian state media. Following the expulsion, UK charge d'affaires Danae Dholakia was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry but left without making a public statement.

This expulsion is a continuation of tit-for-tat responses between both nations, with recent history showcasing a deterioration in UK-Russian relations, especially after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Earlier this year, Russia expelled another British diplomat under similar accusations, leading to reciprocal actions by the UK Foreign Office against Russian staff.
