In brief

Over 200 earthquakes have rattled Greece's Santorini region in just 48 hours, prompting local authorities to take precautionary measures such as school closures and emergency service readiness as experts warn of the risks ahead.

In a concerning turn of events, the beautiful Aegean island of Santorini has experienced a significant uptick in seismic activity, with over 200 minor and moderate earthquakes reported in merely two days. The tremors commenced within the last 48 hours, affecting residents' daily lives and instilling a sense of unease on the spectacular island known for its picturesque views and thriving tourism industry. The Greek ministry for civil protection took swift action on Monday, resulting in the closure of schools and the deployment of emergency services to ensure the safety of island inhabitants. This proactive approach followed a series of intense tremors, with experts remarking on the unusual frequency and intensity of these seismic events. Some quakes even surpassed a magnitude of 4.5, raising alarms amongst seismologists.Gerasimos Papadopoulos, a seismologist, emphasized on social media the growing intensity of the tremors, labeling them an “intense pre-seismic sequence.” In light of this situation, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis urged the local population to remain calm and adhere to directives issued by civil authorities while he attended an EU leaders' meeting in Brussels. While the majority of the earthquakes were relatively minor, reports confirmed that some tremors reached magnitudes of 4.7 and 4.9. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, and damage has been minor, predominantly comprising small landslides caused by the shaking. Authorities remain vigilant, prepared for possible further developments, as Greece is situated on multiple fault lines and experiences earthquakes regularly. However, the pattern of increasing tremor intensity is a less common occurrence, raising concerns among locals and experts alike.
