A series of Israeli airstrikes across Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 22 Palestinians, including senior Hamas figures, according to local officials. The strikes highlight ongoing tensions in the region amidst accusations of ceasefire violations.

At least 22 Palestinians have been killed in a series of Israeli airstrikes across northern and central Gaza, as reported by Hamas medical and civil defence officials.

The airstrikes targeted five sites, including residential homes, resulting in heavy casualties, with a senior Hamas commander among those killed.

The Israeli military confirmed the strikes were a response to an incident earlier where it alleged an 'armed terrorist' fired at soldiers after crossing designated areas under Israeli control. Hamas denied these claims.

Both parties have accused one another of breaching a ceasefire agreement established six weeks ago.

According to Gaza's health ministry, over 310 Palestinians have died in strikes since the ceasefire took effect, hinting at an ongoing crisis in the region.

The strikes have predominantly affected Gaza City in the north, along with Deir al-Balah and Nuseirat camp in central Gaza. Reports indicate that five casualties occurred at the Abbas junction in Rimal, a dense urban area of Gaza City, while three individuals died near a mosque in Deir al-Balah.

Further strikes hit two homes in Nuseirat, with significant fatalities reported, including three deaths from the bombing of the Abu Amouneh family residence and seven from the Abu Shawish family home.

The Prime Minister’s office issued a statement declaring responsibility for the attacks, framing them as necessary responses to Hamas' actions while urging mediators to ensure compliance with the ceasefire.

Following the strikes, Hamas condemned the actions as blatant breaches of the ceasefire, urging intervention from international mediators and the U.S., expressing concerns over Israel's intentions to assert new territorial claims.

The situation escalated after an offensive began in response to a previous Hamas-led attack on Israel that resulted in extensive fatalities and hostages taken. The ongoing violence raises alarms of a renewed humanitarian crisis in Gaza, particularly alarming given the significant loss of life since the beginning of hostilities.
