In an alarming development, Ukraine and Russia conducted drone strikes against each other overnight, resulting in at least five deaths. Officials in Kyiv stated that a 'massive' overnight Russian drone strike had killed at least two people and injured six others. The attack struck residential buildings, causing fires and disrupting essential services like electricity and water.
Meanwhile, Russian officials reported at least three people killed due to a Ukrainian strike in the Rostov region, with the subsequent injuries adding to the toll. Kyiv's military administration chief, Tymur Tkachenko, noted an important evacuation from a high-rise impacted by one of the strikes, where a significant fire broke out.
The strikes occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky engaged with proposed amendments to a U.S.-backed peace plan intended to end the ongoing conflict. Following a series of adjustments proposed by Ukraine's European allies, Zelensky expressed optimism about a viable agreement, suggesting that 'the list of necessary steps to end the war can become doable.'
However, a Kremlin official dismissed the amended plan as 'completely unconstructive.' In Washington, the White House signaled hopefulness around negotiating an end to the escalated conflict. The recent trading of drone strikes emphasizes the volatility of the situation as both sides continue to suffer significant civilian losses and widespread destruction.
