In brief

In the chaos of war, many have faced physical and emotional challenges that exacerbate already difficult circumstances.

In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, a family faced unimaginable challenges, struggling to find safety while carrying their 9-year-old daughter, Lara, who relies on a wheelchair. The experience highlights severe difficulties for people with disabilities as the conflict continues to uproot lives.Zuhair Abu Odeh and his family were forced to evacuate their northern Gaza home when the Israeli military called for a mass exodus from certain areas. In an effort to escape, Mr. Abu Odeh ran into a road crack that jammed his daughter’s wheelchair, which they were ultimately forced to abandon. In a frantic attempt to locate refuge, Abu Odeh and his sons carried Lara on their backs for four and a half excruciating hours, finally reaching Nuseirat, a distance of nine miles. They now reside in a temporary shelter in Khan Younis, facing the everyday struggles prevalent in Gaza: severe shortages of food, water, and power. For those with disabilities, the conflict has compounded their suffering; these challenges include limited access to assistive devices and the destruction of infrastructure that renders homes and public spaces inaccessible. The ongoing turmoil has devastated the approximately two million residents in Gaza, but the impact on the vulnerable population of disabled individuals is particularly acute.Prior to finding a new wheelchair for Lara in February, Abu Odeh and his family relied upon manual assistance to navigate through their community for essentials such as food and medical care. Even with this wheelchair, they continue to face significant obstacles, as they navigate dirt paths within makeshift camps designed to shelter those who have fled their homes. As families like the Abu Odehs attempt to adapt to the impossible conditions of war, the reality for people with disabilities remains grim, necessitating urgent attention and aid to address their unique and pressing needs in such a volatile environment.
