A Surreal Morning: Cargo Ship Grounds in Norwegian Man's Garden

A Norwegian man’s morning took a surprising turn when a large cargo ship unexpectedly found itself in his front garden.

In a bizarre incident early Thursday, Johan Helberg of Byneset, near Trondheim, awoke to find the 135-meter cargo vessel, NCL Salten, had run aground just meters from his house. Helberg was alerted by a neighbor who noticed the ship speeding towards the shore. “I was astonished to see a big ship,” Helberg recounted, adding that the sight was surreal, as he had to bend his neck to see the top of the ship. Another resident, Jostein Jorgensen, heard the ship and rushed to alert Helberg, who hadn’t initially noticed the commotion. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries among the 16 crew members onboard the Cypriot-flagged vessel, which was en route from Trondheim Fjord to Orkanger when it veered off course. The cause of the grounding is under investigation by Norwegian authorities. Helberg humorously referred to the ship as a “bulky new neighbor” that would eventually leave.
