In brief

The lawsuit, filed by three Idaho families, asserts that law enforcement agencies violated constitutional rights during a raid at a rural horse racing track. Detained individuals faced inhumane treatment, including excessive force and racial profiling. The ACLU of Idaho joins the families in seeking justice, demanding accountability and damages for alleged violations.

BOISE, Idaho — In a significant legal action, three families from Idaho, including lawful U.S. residents, have initiated a lawsuit against state and federal law enforcement agencies following a contentious immigration raid at La Catedral, a rural horse racing track. The raid, described as racially motivated, involved detaining nearly 400 people, with claims that treatment policies violated basic constitutional rights.

The families allege that law enforcement, under the direction of the FBI, executed the raid not only to investigate illegal gambling but also for the purpose of identifying undocumented immigrants. Reports indicate that agents detained individuals merely for appearing Latino and subjected them to inhumane conditions, including being kept in zip ties for extended periods without access to food, water, or bathrooms.

This operation was fundamentally an unconstitutional fishing expedition, targeting individuals based on appearance rather than actual suspicion of wrongdoing, stated an attorney for the ACLU of Idaho, which is representing the families in this case.

The October 2022 raid occurred during a popular equestrian event that served as a family gathering for the local Latino community. The families emphasize that events like these are designed for enjoyment, showcasing food vendors and children's games amidst the horse races, providing wholesome entertainment.

On the day of the raid, law enforcement's aggressive tactics left many families terrified. Reports from the ACLU outline that over 200 officers, wearing an overwhelming amount of tactical gear, entered the venue shouting orders and using minimal restraint strategies, such as breaking car windows to intimidate attendees and using rubber bullets on bystanders. This has sparked outrage among community members and civil rights advocates alike.

Despite the law enforcement operations leading to numerous arrests, only five were connected to the alleged gambling violations. The subsequent detentions, alleged to involve multiple agencies including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), raised further questions about the legal and ethical implications of such broad actions against local citizens and legal residents.

Families involved in the legal action wish to broaden the scope of the lawsuit into a class action to protect the rights of all affected by the raid. With calls for legal accountability against perceived racial profiling and excessive force, families hope that a federal court will recognize the infringement of their rights and their demand for reparations.
