Eyewitnesses have described the moment Air Canada flight AC8646 crashed into a fire truck on the runway of New York's LaGuardia airport, killing two pilots and injuring dozens of others.

We were literally like 100 metres away, says 23-year-old Leo Medina, who was onboard another plane on the tarmac when the crash happened. It was like the plane got cut in half.

After visiting the crash site on Monday, US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy discussed the importance of wearing seat belts, stating, As you see from last night, they do save lives.

Québec native Antoine Forest, 30, was identified as one of the two deceased pilots. The other pilot's identity has not yet been disclosed. FAA administrator Bran Bedford highlighted the tragic loss of two young professionals at the beginning of their careers.

The incident occurred at 23:40 local time on Sunday, injuring 41 individuals, some critically. The crash has raised severe concerns and sparked a thorough investigation as it marks the first fatal event at LaGuardia in over 34 years.

Passenger Rebecca Liquori described the chaotic moments after landing, reporting a loudboom and frightening turbulence before the collision. Passengers assisted each other in evacuating the aircraft, amid efforts to reach safety.

As New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared it a tragic collision, he commended first responders for their quick actions that potentially saved lives. Meanwhile, calls for increased stringent safety protocols are expected in light of this grave incident.
