The Justice Department is investigating whether leaders in the Black Lives Matter movement defrauded donors who contributed tens of millions of dollars during racial justice protests in 2020, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
Recently, federal law enforcement officials have issued subpoenas and search warrants as part of an investigation into the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation and other affiliated organizations that have highlighted issues of systemic racism.
Although it is not clear if this investigation will lead to criminal charges, its mere existence adds another layer of scrutiny to a movement that has faced criticism regarding the transparency of its financial practices. Civil rights groups have raised alarms about the potential for government agencies to target progressive groups critical of the administration.
The investigation began during the Biden administration but has gained renewed attention under the Trump administration. Allegations regarding the BLM foundation's financial practices have persisted, especially since it reported receiving over $90 million following the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020. Critics assert that the organization lacked transparency about how these funds were allocated.
In 2022, some leaders within the BLM foundation confirmed that donations were used to purchase a property in Los Angeles worth $6 million, which included a large residential structure, raising further concerns among supporters about fiscal responsibility.
Despite the allegations, the BLM Foundation maintains it is not a target of any federal criminal investigation, emphasizing a commitment to transparency and responsible use of resources aimed at enhancing the lives of Black communities.
The movement originated in 2013 after the acquittal of George Zimmerman, following the shooting death of Trayvon Martin but gained significant traction following the death of other Black individuals at the hands of police, transforming 'Black Lives Matter' into a rallying cry for progressive activism.
With reports indicating that investigations have not previously uncovered evidence of wrongdoing, the outcome of the current scrutiny remains to be seen, but it adds pressure on BLM leadership amid increasing calls for accountability.
