In brief

A series of earthquakes, including a significant 6.2-magnitude tremor, struck near Istanbul, prompting evacuations and heightening concerns among residents. Emergency services are conducting building safety checks amidst reports of fear and anxiety.

Istanbul has experienced a series of earthquakes, the most significant being a 6.2-magnitude tremor that shook the city on Wednesday. This quake struck at 12:49 local time (09:49 GMT) at a shallow depth of 6.92 km (4.3 miles), causing residents in Turkey's largest city to flee their homes in panic. Despite no immediate reports of casualties or extensive damage, local officials are advising residents to avoid areas that may have been impacted. The earthquake's epicenter was situated along the coast of the Sea of Marmara, approximately 80 km (50 miles) west of Istanbul. Alongside the main tremor, Turkish emergency services noted two smaller earthquakes and several aftershocks, which have heightened nerves in a city still reeling from past seismic catastrophes. Residents reported that this latest quake was among the strongest they had experienced in years, with items falling from shelves and lamps crashing to the ground. Economics professor Selva Demiralp, who was with her family in a high-rise building during the quake, described the experience as frightening yet comforting as her family remained together amidst the chaos. She noted that while they were safe and found no significant damage in their building, there remains a pervasive anxiety regarding the possibility of a more severe quake to come. Southern Turkey faced a tragic devastation earlier this year, with two major earthquakes claiming over 55,000 lives. Istanbul, a metropolis of 16 million residents, sits perilously close to seismic fault lines, raising ongoing concerns about the potential for future quakes. Officials urge residents to stay informed and vigilant as they continue assessments to ensure public safety.
