The Israeli military announced on Sunday that an internal examination of a tragic incident in Gaza, which led to the deaths of several medics and a United Nations employee on March 23, revealed critical operational failures. Following the findings, a deputy commander will be dismissed.
The attack, which took place in Rafah, targeted emergency vehicles sent by the Palestine Red Crescent Society and Civil Defense. Initially, the Israeli military confirmed the strike but provided various explanations for the events that unfolded, ultimately acknowledging it as a significant misstep that invited international outrage and calls for accountability.
In their statement, the military identified “several professional failures, breaches of orders,” and an inadequate reporting of the assault. Misunderstandings by soldiers on the ground, who thought they were facing a genuine threat, contributed to the tragic outcome. The military conceded that firing upon a U.N. vehicle constituted a serious breach of operational protocols.
As per eyewitness accounts and video evidence, Israeli forces opened fire on clearly marked ambulances and emergency response vehicles. The military's claims that the vehicles were advancing suspiciously without lights were also directly contradicted following the release of a video found on the cellphone of one of the deceased paramedics, clearly showing the vehicles flashing lights as they approached.
Subsequently, Israeli soldiers conducted an operation where most of the deceased were buried in a mass grave, while the ambulances and rescue vehicles were crushed—a move that has since been regarded as inappropriate by military officials.
The inquiry led to consequential reprimands for several officers, while a commander will receive a warning for failing to oversee the incident adequately. The dismissal of the battalion's deputy commander was based on incomplete reporting during post-incident debriefings.
