TAMPA, Fla. — Authorities have escalated their investigation into the disappearance of two graduate students from the University of South Florida by filing murder charges against the roommate of one of the victims.

Hisham Abugharbieh, 26, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Zamil Limon and Nahida Bristy. As the investigation unfolds, Limon's remains were discovered on the Howard Frankland bridge, while Bristy remains unaccounted for.

Abugharbieh, a former student at the university, was apprehended after police were called to his family’s home concerning a domestic violence incident. Following his initial detention for multiple charges, including tampering with evidence, investigators subsequently elevated the charges to murder.

The couple reportedly disappeared on April 16, with Limon last seen at their apartment and Bristy at a campus building shortly after. A relative mentioned that they were contemplating marriage, amplifying the community’s concern over their welfare.

As authorities conduct their search for Bristy, anyone with information is urged to contact the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. In light of Abugharbieh's history of previous arrests, including misdemeanor charges stemming from domestic incidents, the case underlines the struggles faced by many individuals within the academic community.

The psychological impact on the campus community continues to be significant, as students and faculty alike mourn the loss of Limon while hoping for the safe return of Bristy.
