In brief
Reports indicate that three officials, including a chief engineer, were arrested after a navy destroyer launch went awry, disappointing Kim Jong-un during a public ceremony intended to showcase military advancements.
North Korea has recently made headlines following the arrest of three shipyard officials due to a failed launch of a new navy destroyer last week, an event that sparked outrage from its leader, Kim Jong-un, according to state media reports on Sunday. Among those apprehended are the chief engineer of the Chongjin shipyard, the head of the hull-construction workshop, and an administrative deputy manager. The failed launch, which took place on Wednesday, witnessed a spectacle intended to demonstrate Kim's commitment to modernizing the nation's naval capabilities. However, the destroyer, weighing 5,000 tons, lost stability as it was being maneuvered sideways into the water, resulting in a disastrous execution. Subsequent satellite imagery revealed the ship lying on its side with only its stern submerged, while the bow remained stuck on the launching ramp. In an effort to obscure the embarrassment from foreign surveillance, the vessel was draped with blue tarpaulins.State media reported that Kim Jong-un described the botched event as "criminal" and vowed severe repercussions for those responsible. This launch was meant to follow a successful deployment earlier in April at a different site on the west coast of North Korea, suggesting a pattern of inconsistency in the country's military advancements.
