Sundus al-Kurd has finally been reunited with her daughter Bisan, after a distressing two-year separation due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The reunion took place at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where Sundus waited with a pink-embroidered dress in hand, anxious yet hopeful. The mother described her emotions as being caught between fear and joy, concerned if her daughter would accept her after such a long time apart.
The two were separated when Bisan, born prematurely, was evacuated from Gaza's Shifa Hospital alongside more than 30 severely ill newborns. This evacuation occurred amidst heavy fighting in November 2023 and the chaos involved in relocating premature infants from a hospital complex that had been occupied by Israeli forces.
Sundus's struggle to obtain information about her daughter's wellbeing was heart-wrenching. For nearly a year, she lived in despair, fearing the worst, as reports of casualties among evacuated infants circulated in the news. However, hope was reignited when she learned her daughter was alive and thriving in an Egyptian field hospital, identified by a pink bracelet given immediately after birth.
