In brief

Valerie, a miniature dachshund, evaded capture for 529 days after escaping on Kangaroo Island, Australia. Recognized by her pink collar, she survived by foraging before being located and prepared for a reunion with her devoted owners.

Valerie, the tiny dachshund who went missing over a year ago, had become somewhat of a local legend on Kangaroo Island, Australia. After slipping from her pen in November 2023, she spent an incredible 529 days in the wilderness. Despite various sightings and numerous search efforts, Valerie managed to remain elusive to rescuers until now.The dedicated team at Kangala Wildlife Rescue, led by Jared Karran, reported that Valerie was found “safe and sound” last week. Now, efforts are focused on helping her readjust to life with her owners, Josh Fishlock and Georgia Gardner. The couple had been vacationing on the island when Valerie made her escape, prompting an initial five-day search before they reluctantly returned home empty-handed.Valerie was finally spotted approximately 10 miles from her original escape point, and notably, she was still wearing her pink collar, which significantly aided in her identification. Georgia Gardner described her beloved pet as “not a very outside, rough-and-tough dog,” but it seems Valerie adapted by drinking from local water sources and scavenging for food. The joy of Valerie’s rescue has sparked excitement and relief, as her owners prepare for what they hope will be a heartwarming reunion. While challenges remain for Valerie as she acclimates back to domestic life, her extraordinary survival story continues to resonate with the local community that supported her search throughout the long months of her absence.
