BEAUFORT, S.C. — A tragic mass shooting early Sunday at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island has claimed the lives of four individuals and left at least 20 more injured. Many in the community are grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, which unfolded during a Battery Creek High School alumni tailgate.

The devastating event has sparked fears and concerns about safety in the area, renowned as the largest Gullah community along the South Carolina coast. Those who attended the gathering were reported to have fled in panic, seeking shelter from the gunfire.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that multiple victims were quickly attended to following the incident, with several being transported to local hospitals. Four individuals remain in critical condition. “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones,” they stated on social media.

St. Helena Island is home to over 5,000 descendants of enslaved Africans, who have managed to preserve their rich cultural heritage, including traditional crafts and dialects. The community’s deep-rooted history and its unique societal structure have significantly contributed to the region’s identity.

Local and federal representatives, including U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, expressed their condolences and solidarity with the affected families. The broader implications of gun violence, particularly within marginalized communities, prompt calls for thorough investigations and dialogues on community safety.

As the St. Helena community mourns, some advocates are highlighting the need for healing and resilience, urging community members to reflect on their shared heritage and support one another during this challenging time.
