In a tragic incident reported by Ukrainian officials, a missile strike on a residential area in Kharkiv has resulted in the death of two individuals, including a three-year-old child, and injuries to around 28 others.
The dual missile attack on Friday afternoon severely damaged a multi-storey residential block, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to describe the assault as 'heinous'. In his statement, he emphasized that the Russian aggression continues unabated, undermining diplomatic efforts.
In response, Russia's Defence Ministry denied any involvement in the missile strike, claiming that the explosions were caused by detonated Ukrainian munitions.
This attack comes just prior to vital peace negotiations scheduled to take place in Kyiv, where around 15 countries, along with EU and NATO representatives, are expected to meet to foster diplomatic discussions. A US delegation will participate via video link.
Rescue operations are underway, led by over 80 volunteers searching the debris. Among the injured is a six-month-old baby, with 16 individuals receiving hospitalization for their wounds.
The fallout from the missile attack underscores the ongoing conflict's toll on civilian life, as Zelensky articulates the tragic consequences of warfare, stating, 'Unfortunately, this is how the Russians treat life and people – they continue killing, despite all efforts by the world and especially by the United States in the diplomatic process.'
