During a recent press conference, UK Defence Secretary John Healey revealed that three Russian submarines undertook a covert operation above crucial undersea cables and pipelines in waters north of the UK. British naval vessels and aircraft were deployed to counter the detected activity, ensuring no immediate harm was inflicted on the country's infrastructure.
Addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, Healey declared, We see you. We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences. The Russian embassy in London, however, refuted Healey’s claims, asserting that the country poses no threat to the UK's underwater infrastructure.
These undersea cables are vital for the UK, facilitating over 90% of its daily internet traffic, with approximately 60 cables connecting various points along the coast. Healey mentioned that one of the Russian submarines acted as a diversion while two others surveilled the cables, and emphasized that the UK is determined to safeguard its critical infrastructure against potential threats.
Along with Royal Navy ships and helicopters, allies including Norway participated in monitoring the Russian submarines. This instance reflects a broader narrative of hybrid warfare, where acts of espionage and covert operations are carried out without direct military confrontation.
