Virginia State University Shooting Leaves Five Wounded, Suspects at Large

Five students and related individuals were wounded when a shooting occurred outside a residence hall at Virginia State University. The incident happened early Saturday morning, about 1:28 AM local time.

Police responded shortly thereafter and discovered five people bearing gunshot wounds. Four of the injuries were not life‑threatening, while one is reported to be in critical condition. All injured were transported to local hospitals for treatment.

Authorities identified that more than one shooter was involved, yet no arrest has taken place. Chesterfield County Police are leading the investigation with help from campus and regional law enforcement. The suspects remain at large as investigators review surveillance footage.

The university temporarily closed the campus for security but has since lifted the lockdown, maintaining a significant police presence. Classes for the new term are slated to start on Monday and dormitories reopened for returning students on Friday.

The university explained that one of the wounded was a student, and another victim was under 18. The student victim received non‑life‑threatening injuries and was discharged from hospital. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about firearm incidents at educational institutions.

Virginia State University, with an enrollment of around 5,000, is a historically black university established to provide higher education to disenfranchised African Americans when mainstream colleges excluded them. The shooting therefore casts a stark light on campus safety for minority communities and reflects larger patterns of gun violence on a national scale.
