In brief

A recent disaster in northern Brazil has left four dead and several missing after a bridge collapse sent trucks laden with toxic chemicals into the waterway below.

In a shocking incident on Sunday, the central span of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, connecting the states of Tocantins and Maranhão, gave way, leading to the tragic loss of life and concerns about water safety. Eyewitness accounts reported that eight vehicles, including three carrying thousands of liters of pesticides and sulphuric acid, fell into the Tocantins River. Local councillor Elias Junior, who filmed the moments leading to the collapse, expressed disbelief over the event, stating that he had come to highlight structural cracks in the bridge and never anticipated the disaster. Rescue teams quickly initiated operations on the river, recovering four bodies, including that of a female truck driver and an 11-year-old girl. Fortunately, one man managed to survive the ordeal. Authorities have advised residents of Estreito and Aguiarnopolis to refrain from using river water until further notice due to contamination concerns. Diving teams have temporarily halted operations to evaluate the location and the extent of the chemical leak. The 1,600-foot long bridge, constructed in the 1960s, serves as a vital connection between the two states but now stands as a stark reminder of the importance of infrastructure maintenance and safety.
