In brief

In the face of relentless conflict in Myanmar, makeshift universities established by anti-junta forces serve as a beacon of hope for students seeking education and democracy, despite the dangers they endure.

In eastern Myanmar, life for students is fraught with peril, yet education endures among the chaos of civil war. The Karenni Medical College, an institution founded by rebel forces two years ago, epitomizes this resilience. Set within the jungle, students like Khuu Nay Reh Win exemplify the extraordinary circumstances they face; when he heard military jets in the vicinity, he sought refuge in a bomb shelter only to confront another threat – a snake, which he fought off with a stick. This illustrates the dual dangers of conflict and nature that these students must navigate daily.Amid the ongoing military coup that has upended Myanmar since 2021, anti-junta officials report the establishment of 18 educational institutions in rebel-held regions. Though lacking adequate funding for supplies and equipped with rudimentary facilities—primarily bamboo structures—these establishments symbolize hope for a future rooted in democracy and education. Dr. Myo Khant Ko Ko, the college’s founder, expressed urgency in offering education, stating, “We opened without waiting for the revolution to end...young people must not be cut off from education for too long.”The ongoing civil war has decimated normal life in Myanmar, leading to numerous casualties and displacing millions. Yet, amidst this turmoil, efforts to maintain an educational framework represent a commitment to building a new society grounded in democratic principles. The experiences of these students reflect their unyielding desire for knowledge, even in the face of relentless adversity. They are not only learning medical skills but also contributing to a vision for a more democratic future for their nation, despite the shadows of war that loom above them.
