In brief
The League urged unrestricted ICRC access, medical care and the release of sick inmates, labeling the acts as breaches of humanitarian law. Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office reports repeated assaults, including beatings and tear gas, in the prison’s Rakevet section.
On Sunday, Nov. 2, the Arab League issued a statement demanding an independent international investigation into alleged torture and systematic abuses against Palestinian prisoners from the Gaza Strip held at Israel’s Ramla Prison.
The statement notes that several detainees in the prison’s Rakevet section have suffered injuries and burns after repeated acts of repression, describing the conduct as violations of international humanitarian law and crimes against humanity that require accountability.
In its appeal, the League called for unrestricted access by the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent monitoring bodies to the facility, and demanded that injured prisoners receive immediate medical care and that sick and wounded detainees be released without delay.
According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, Gaza detainees in the Rakevet section were subjected to repeated assaults, including beatings with batons, tear gas and pepper spray, as well as the firing of rubber bullets and the use of stun grenades.
The office’s report, published on Oct. 24, states that between 9,350 and 9,400 Palestinian prisoners and detainees were held in Israeli jails as of October 2026.
The Arab League’s demand reflects a broader call for the international community and United Nations bodies to intervene and protect Palestinian prisoners, urging the end of impunity for alleged violations.
While the statement has not yet prompted a formal investigation, it marks a significant escalation in regional pressure and highlights ongoing concerns over the treatment of detainees in Israeli custody.
