In brief
In a thrilling semi-final match at Indian Wells, Jack Draper showcased his resilience and grit by defeating four-time major champion Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 6-1, 0-6, 6-4. At just 23 years old, Draper's victory not only marked a significant milestone in his career but also secured his spot in the ATP's top 10 rankings for the first time. The match took a pivotal turn when video technology assisted Draper in reversing a double bounce call, allowing him to take charge in the decisive set. Draper's confidence surged as he overcame confirmation of his fitness, having previously struggled with a hip injury.
With this surprise victory, Draper now prepares to face Denmark's Holger Rune in the finals of the Masters 1,000 event. Rune advanced by defeating Daniil Medvedev in his semi-final match. Amidst the tension, Draper maintained focus against the odds of the pro-Alcaraz crowd, and despite the Spaniard's resurgence, he curated a comeback showcasing mental fortitude. Meanwhile, British doubles player Olivia Nicholls reached the finals in women’s doubles, but fell short of claiming her first WTA 1,000 title, solidifying her status as a rising star in the sport.
