Police in Mumbai have apprehended a suspect following a shocking knife attack on renowned Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan last week. The assailant, identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, allegedly entered Khan’s residence to commit robbery, leading to a violent confrontation in which Khan was stabbed multiple times. He is currently recovering from surgery.
Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national according to police, reportedly had been residing in India unlawfully. His lawyer disputes these claims, asserting that sufficient evidence is lacking to confirm Shehzad's citizenship. The police arrested him in Thane, a suburban area of Mumbai, where preliminary investigations indicated that he had been in the city for approximately six months working under a false identity.
Dixit Gedam, deputy commissioner of Mumbai police, detailed how Shehzad allegedly broke into Khan's home intending to steal, using a knife and threatening the occupants. Eyewitness testimony provided by a nurse working in Khan's home described a terrifying scene, where the intruder demanded a ransom of 10 million rupees and injured a staff member during the altercation.
As investigators continue their work, they briefly detained multiple individuals who bore similarities to the assailant captured on surveillance footage. Meanwhile, the attack generates widespread media attention, emphasizing ongoing security concerns in Mumbai, home to a bustling film industry and millions of residents.
