In brief
Two celebrated Russian figure skating champions, Yevgeniya Shishkova, 52, and Vadim Naumov, 55, tragically lost their lives when their American Airlines flight collided with a military helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River while approaching Washington, D.C. The Skating Club of Boston, where the couple coached, confirmed their unfortunate demise. Among the 14 lives lost in this catastrophe, the couple was returning from the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships in Wichita, Kansas.
Married in St. Petersburg in 1995, Shishkova and Naumov reached the pinnacle of their sport in the 1990s, winning numerous medals including the 1994 World Championships. They had moved to the U.S. in 1998 as many Russian skaters sought opportunities during their homeland’s economic collapse. The couple’s legacy in the sport will be cherished as both coaches and beloved figures in the skating community. The impact of their loss will resonate deeply within the world of figure skating.
