In brief
In a shocking incident, the Skating Club of Boston is mourning the loss of promising figure skaters Jinna Han, 13, and Spencer Lane, 16, who tragically died in a plane crash alongside family members and coaches. The two skaters were seen as champions of the future, and their untimely deaths have left the skating community in deep pain.
The loss resonates heavily across the club, where the duo was beloved. According to Doug Zeghibe, the club's CEO, both skaters had demonstrated extraordinary talent and dedication to their sport. Their journeys were cut short when they boarded an American Airlines regional jet after attending a High Performance Camp following the US National Figure Skating Championships. On the flight, a mid-air collision occurred with a helicopter, leading to the tragic demise of all 60 passengers, including their mothers and experienced coaches. The emotional impact is further heightened by the close relationships forged within the skating community through years of teamwork and training. Many club members fondly recall the warmth and positivity Jinna and Spencer brought to the rink daily, a sentiment echoed by fellow skaters Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov. In a heartwarming gesture of solidarity, former Olympian Nancy Kerrigan also paid her respects, emphasizing the importance of community support during challenging times. The club's history is marred by another tragedy, recalling the 1961 plane crash that took the lives of 10 club members from the US figure skating team. As the club prepares for the upcoming World Figure Skating Championships, its leaders are committed to honoring those lost while navigating their grief. While planning the future, CEO Zeghibe recognizes the necessity of focusing on positivity and community healing. Amidst the grief, they urge all members to take one day at a time as they begin the journey of recovery together.
