In brief

The commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces warns that U.S. policy shifts could create a dangerous power vacuum allowing ISIS to regroup, as Kurdish-led regions face intensified assaults from Turkey-backed militant groups.

Gen. Mazlum Kobani, leader of the Kurdish forces known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (S.D.F.), has expressed deep concern over the evolving U.S. strategy in Syria, suggesting it may inadvertently pave the way for a resurgence of ISIS amidst escalating violence and territorial tensions. These Kurdish forces have been a critical ally in the fight against ISIS, working alongside American forces in years past as they established security in regions plagued by conflict and instability.Their role in combatting the Islamic State has been pivotal, given their control over areas where many fighters were captured. Kurdish militia operated prisons housing suspected ISIS members and managed displaced persons camps, while simultaneously forming a local governance structure in northeastern Syria. However, the current political landscape is increasingly precarious following a recent wave of uprisings against the Assad regime, creating openings for opportunistic militant groups.Recently, these Kurdish forces have faced aggression from Turkish-backed militants in key battlefronts such as Manbij and Kobani. Reports indicate that these clashes have been exacerbated by Turkish drone strikes and overt military support. In the midst of this warfare, Gen. Kobani disclosed that vital resources are being redirected towards frontline defense, forcing the S.D.F. to withdraw attention and personnel from guarding prisons that detain alleged ISIS operatives.“It creates a vacuum that can easily be exploited by ISIS and other hostile forces,” Gen. Kobani stated in an urgent warning, adding that if the U.S. continues to retreat from its commitments to the Kurdish allies, the hard-fought gains against terrorist groups could unravel. The repercussions of these strategic decisions could resonate far beyond the borders of Syria, heightening tensions in an already volatile region.
