In brief

Start-up Alchemie Technology aims to transform fabric dyeing with its innovative Endeavour machine, potentially slashing water and energy consumption by up to 95% and 85% respectively.

In a small rural corner of Taiwan, Alchemie Technology is poised to disrupt the global garment industry by introducing pioneering dyeing technology. The start-up has honed in on one of the most environmentally damaging practices in the apparel sector: dyeing fabric. With the world’s first digital dyeing process, Alchemie claims its Endeavour machine could drastically lower the industry's carbon footprint and water usage.Historically, fabric dyeing has remained largely unchanged for over 175 years. Traditionally, fabric would be soaked in massive amounts of water heated to 135 degrees Celsius, resulting in a staggering production of toxic wastewater. Alchemie's founder, Dr. Alan Hudd, highlights that dyeing one ton of polyester can produce up to 30 tons of harmful wastewater. The sheer scale of water usage is also staggering; the apparel industry consumes approximately five trillion liters of water annually just for dyeing. The repercussions are severe: the industry accounts for 20% of the world's industrial water pollution and contributes to roughly 10% of global carbon emissions, as reported by the United Nations Environment Programme. Alchemie’s technology could address these pressing issues. The Endeavour machine employs a technique akin to inkjet printing, which speeds up the dyeing process while conserving water and energy. The machine is capable of applying an impressive 1.2 billion droplets per meter of fabric, with precision that mimics a light switch— efficient and environmentally friendly.Alchemie's advancements come amid a wave of innovations in dyeing technology. Other players, such as China’s NTX and Swedish start-up Imogo, are also working on sustainable solutions that could cut water and energy use drastically. Experts recognize the potential for these technologies to disrupt traditional methods while reducing resource consumption.Kirsi Niinimäki, a professor at Aalto University in Finland, calls the developments promising, underscoring the necessity for ongoing studies on fabric durability and chemistry use. With Alchemie’s rapid progress, the company is testing its technology in Taiwan’s climate, realizing the need for air-conditioning to maintain optimal operating conditions. As they plan expansion into South Asia and Portugal by 2025, Alchemie confronts the challenge of scaling operations to meet the demands of major fashion brands like Inditex, which would require hundreds of Endeavour machines across its supply chains. With an increasing push towards sustainable fashion, the integration of advanced dyeing processes may just usher in a new era of eco-conscious apparel production.
