In brief

Roman Lavrynovych made a court appearance following incidents involving fires at properties linked to Premier Keir Starmer, sparking concerns for public safety.

A 21-year-old Ukrainian, Roman Lavrynovych, appeared in Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 16, accused of perpetrating arson at two residences and a vehicle tied to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Arrested earlier in the week, Lavrynovych faces three counts of arson “with intent to endanger life” in connection with fires in North London.During the hearing, Lavrynovych dressed in a gray tracksuit, provided brief affirmations of his identity through an interpreter. Prosecuting lawyer Sarah Przybylska detailed the ties of the burned properties and vehicle to Starmer, while stating that the motivation behind the alleged acts is currently unexplained.Following his brief court appearance, Lavrynovych was remanded in custody until his next appearance at London’s Central Criminal Court, known as the Old Bailey, scheduled for June 6. The series of fires began early in the week, including one blaze at Starmer’s former family residence in Kentish Town, which he occupied until the family moved to 10 Downing Street last year. Another fire occurred at a property in Islington linked to Starmer from his time in the 1990s, and the third involved a car previously owned by him, now belonging to a neighbor. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, although there was damage to the doorway of the currently rented Kentish Town home.Due to the high-profile nature of the case, the investigation has been led by counterterrorism police, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the potential risks posed by such crimes against public figures.
