A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has rocked the Caribbean Sea, leading to tsunami warnings across many nations in the region, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor's epicenter is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of Honduras and about 130 miles (209 km) south-west of the Cayman Islands.

Authorities have issued multiple tsunami alerts for coastal areas, including Colombia, the Cayman Islands, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Cuba. The National Weather Service has highlighted potential hazards for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, cautioning that residents should be aware of "strong currents and waves dangerous to those in or very near water."

According to the USGS, such large seismic events are not uncommon in this particular section of the tectonic plate boundary, noting that a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred in the vicinity in 2018, which resulted in damage and triggered a small tsunami. Fortunately, the remote location of these earthquakes tends to mitigate the risk of extensive damage caused by shaking.
