King Charles III was briefly hospitalized on Thursday after experiencing side effects from his ongoing cancer treatment, according to a statement from Buckingham Palace. The 76-year-old monarch was taken to the hospital for observation but has since returned to his residence at Clarence House. The palace confirmed that his public engagements for the following day would be canceled as a precautionary measure.

In February of last year, King Charles disclosed his diagnosis of an undisclosed form of cancer, which has necessitated ongoing treatment. Although the palace has not elaborated on the specifics of the side effects, they emphasized that they were temporary and customary for patients receiving medical treatment.

In recent months, King Charles has resumed an active schedule, welcoming foreign dignitaries such as President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and visiting significant military assets like the H.M.S. Prince of Wales. However, details regarding his prognosis or the specifics of his treatment remain unavailable. It is known that his cancer was identified during surgery for an enlarged prostate in February 2024, but the palace clarified that he does not have prostate cancer.

This contrasts with the experience of his daughter-in-law, Catherine, Princess of Wales, who successfully announced her remission from cancer after several months of chemotherapy. Despite this medical setback, palace officials have sought to reassure the public regarding the king’s health, stating that his recovery is proceeding positively.

The king remains committed to his royal duties, with a planned state visit to Italy next month. He had also intended to host foreign ambassadors for credential presentations and undertake various public engagements in Birmingham, for which he expressed disappointment over the cancellation and plans to reschedule.

“This is a developing story, and updates will follow,” officials added.
