SOUTHPORT, N.C. — A heartbreaking mass shooting marred the peace of a charming seaside town in North Carolina, resulting in three deaths and five injuries. Local police have described the attack as highly premeditated and have brought the suspect, Nigel Edge, into custody.

The incident unfolded Saturday night at the American Fish Company, a well-frequented bar located along the scenic waterfront of Southport, approximately 30 miles south of Wilmington. According to Police Chief Todd Coring, Edge, aged 40 and a resident of nearby Oak Island, allegedly opened fire on a crowded gathering from a small boat, before quickly fleeing the scene.

The location was targeted, stated Chief Coring during a press briefing, although specifics regarding Edge's motivation remain undisclosed.

Authorities reported that, roughly 30 minutes post-shooting, a U.S. Coast Guard crew detained an individual matching Edge’s description while he was attempting to retrieve his boat at a public ramp on Oak Island. He has since been charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and several other offenses.

During the press conference, Chief Coring shared that the weapon used was an assault rifle, though details about the specific type have not been released. Additionally, the chief mentioned that the suspect self-identifies as a combat veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Edge's first court appearance is set for Monday, with district attorney Jon David confirming that he is being held without bond. Among the injured victims, at least one is in critical condition, prompting concern for their survival.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the small coastal community, prompting an extensive investigation by multiple agencies, including the State Bureau of Investigation and the Coast Guard. Officials have yet to publicly identify the victims of this tragic event.

Chief Charlie Morris of the Oak Island Police noted that the suspect had a history of minor police contacts and had previously filed lawsuits against the town and its police department.

As the investigation progresses, the community grapples with the tragic aftermath of this unthinkable act of violence.
