In brief
The Guatemalan government has launched a significant operation against Lev Tahor, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect, after reports emerged of potential human trafficking and abuse. Following the escape of four minors, authorities acted swiftly, removing 160 children and teenagers from the sect's compound.
Guatemalan authorities conducted a major raid on Friday at a compound associated with Lev Tahor, a reclusive ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect accused of exploitation and abuse. In a bold move, officials removed at least 160 minors from the site amid serious allegations of human trafficking, forced pregnancy, and mistreatment.Regional prosecutor Dimas Jiménez y Jiménez disclosed that while no arrests were made during the operation, authorities are currently gathering evidence and preparing potential charges against community members. "We suspect these crimes were committed by a member of the community," he remarked at a recent press conference.Crucially, the investigation was catalyzed after four non-Guatemalan minors managed to escape the community last month and highlighted their experiences to authorities. Nancy Lorena Paiz García, the special prosecutor for human trafficking, indicated that significant evidence, including medical examinations, corroborated the minors’ claims of abuse. In response, a large force of 480 police officers, soldiers, and psychologists descended on the heavily fortified compound in the Santa Rosa department, near the Guatemalan-Mexican border. During the raid, officials seized various electronic devices while also searching the property for signs of child pornography and human remains. Notably, officials reported discovering bodies buried on site, with claims of missing children necessitating further investigation. As the community comprises around 500 members living behind thick walls and locked gates, this incident marks a critical phase in the Guatemalan government's efforts to rein in the alleged criminal activities linked to Lev Tahor, shedding light on the ongoing challenges of protecting vulnerable individuals within closed communities.
