In brief
Viswash Kumar Ramesh, the only known passenger to survive the Air India Flight 171 tragedy, recounted his surreal experience to his family moments after the incident. As his loved ones in Leicester, England, grappled with grief, 38-year-old Viswash struggled with the juxtaposition of his survival against the backdrop of profound loss.
Viswash was returning to London from Ahmedabad, India, when tragedy struck. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 241 others, including his brother Ajay. In a state of shock, he reportedly told his family on a video call from the crash site, “I have no idea how I got outside." His brother Nayan recounted, “He was like: ‘I can’t see my brother. I can’t see any other passengers.’"While Viswash was described as disoriented and sustaining multiple injuries, a doctor in India assured that his condition was stable. Family members gathered at their Leicester home, moving between sorrow and disbelief. Nayan further shared that Viswash’s recovery would necessitate rest and that his communication would be limited for some time as he began to process the traumatic event.
