In brief
In the wake of severe flooding in Malaysia, more than 122,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes. As three lives have already been lost, authorities are bracing for potentially more dangerous conditions as continued heavy rain is forecast.
Heavy rainfall in Malaysia has resulted in catastrophic flooding, pushing over 122,000 individuals from their homes across the nation. Tragically, the severe weather has claimed the lives of three people, with officials expressing concerns that this number may rise as heavy rain and storm warnings remain in effect. Thousands of emergency responders have been dispatched to assist in rescuing those stranded by the floodwaters, which have rendered numerous vehicles and homes fully submerged, with reports of residents navigating waist-deep waters. The flooding, which began earlier this week, has hit particularly hard in the northeastern state of Kelantan—sharing a border with Thailand—where the National Disaster Management Agency has reported that evacuees from this region alone account for approximately 63% of those displaced nationwide. The current crisis has surpassed the total number of displaced individuals during the calamitous floods of 2014, which left a significant mark on the country. To support those affected, the disaster agency has established 679 emergency shelters to provide refuge. Other states grappling with the impact of flooding include Terengganu, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Selangor, Johor, Melaka, and Perak. Prompt action from the prime minister's office has seen provisions for disaster management sent to the affected state governments. Additionally, the prime minister has mandated that his cabinet members refrain from taking leave to concentrate on addressing the disaster.Meanwhile, neighboring Thailand has also been severely impacted, with floods affecting more than 240,000 households across six provinces, prompting the military to launch rescue operations for those in need. Malaysia is currently in the midst of its annual monsoon season, which commences in November, a period notorious for heavy flooding. The nation experienced one of its worst flood episodes in 2021, resulting in at least 14 fatalities.
