Last Friday, during the men's middle-distance final at the World Games in Chengdu, 29-year-old Italian orienteer Mattia Debertolis collapsed amid temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. Shortly after, he was found unconscious and was promptly taken to one of China's top medical institutions, where he received immediate and expert care. Despite the efforts, Debertolis succumbed to his unknown medical emergency four days later on Tuesday.
Known for his competitive spirit, Debertolis was recognized as the 137th-ranked athlete worldwide, and had previously secured a 5th place finish in the 2022 World Cup final. His participation at the World Games marked a significant moment as it featured sports that are not included in the Olympics, showcasing diverse athletic talents globally.
Organizers of the World Games have expressed their condolences and commitment to supporting Debertolis' family as well as the broader orienteering community during this tragic time. As investigations continue into the cause of his sudden collapse, the orienteering world remains united in mourning a gifted athlete whose promising career was cut drastically short.
