Hunter Schafer, the acclaimed transgender actress known for her role in HBO’s hit teen drama "Euphoria," has recently taken to social media to voice her frustration regarding her new US passport, which erroneously lists her gender as male. Despite appropriately selecting 'female' on her application, Schafer was shocked to see the 'M' marker when she received her document.
In a candid TikTok video, the 26-year-old actress shared her disbelief, noting that her previous passport accurately reflected her female gender. "I just didn't think it was actually going to happen," she explained. Her concerns are rooted in policies implemented during former President Donald Trump's administration, which, on his first day in office, introduced an executive order limiting sex designation to strictly male or female, based on a person's sex at birth.
While under the Biden administration, the option for non-binary and gender non-confirming individuals to select "X" on their passports became available in 2022, Schafer's experience starkly highlights the inconsistencies and barriers many transgender individuals still face.
Having lost her prior passport while working abroad, Schafer applied for a replacement that would reflect her gender identity, yet encountered an unexpected setback. As she anticipates traveling internationally next week, she fears complications at security checkpoints due to the mismatch between her gender identity and the documentation. She emphasized that this reflects a broader issue not only affecting her, but many in the transgender community, regardless of socioeconomic status.
Schafer had previously adjusted her driver's license and passport gender markers as a teenager, but her birth certificate remains unchanged. She expressed concern about having to disclose her transgender status to authorities during her travels. Her narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by transgender individuals in a society where policies may deem their identities as "non-changeable."
As the third season of "Euphoria" continues to engage audiences with its exploration of complex characters and gender identities, Schafer remains committed to advocating for greater recognition and understanding of transgender issues within the systems that govern society.
