In an unprecedented twist in the K-pop landscape, fictional bands from the animated musical film KPop Demon Hunters have eclipsed real-life titans BTS and Blackpink on US music charts, heralding a new era in popular culture. The film has surged in popularity, becoming Netflix's most-streamed movie worldwide in under two weeks, accumulating over 33 million views.
On Friday, the catchy track "Your Idol," performed by the Saja Boys—one of the prominent male groups featured in the film—claimed the top spot on the US Spotify chart. This achievement marks them as the highest-charting male K-pop group in US Spotify history, surpassing the celebrated BTS.
Following closely behind, the song "Golden," credited to the female group Huntr/x, secured the number two position, positioning them ahead of Blackpink as the highest-charting female K-pop group in the US. The accompanying soundtrack of KPop Demon Hunters has also made waves, debuting in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, the highest yet for a film soundtrack this year.
The film narrates the exhilarating saga of Huntr/x, which features three female protagonists—Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—leading double lives as powerful demon hunters who shield their ardent fans from otherworldly threats. Meanwhile, the Saja Boys, masquerading as humans, are on a mission from their demon king Gwi-ma to ensnare the souls of Huntr/x's supporters.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, Kpop Demon Hunters has benefitted from the expertise of renowned producers, including Teddy Park and Lindgren, noted for their work with significant K-pop acts.
The cultural climate becomes even more intriguing as industry stalwarts BTS prepare for their much-anticipated US return, following the completion of military service by all members. They plan to release a new album and commence a tour next year. Meanwhile, Blackpink is gearing up for their inaugural all-stadium world tour set to kick off on July 5, promising to unveil new music during their Deadline World Tour.
