In brief
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation faces severe allegations from a former contractor accusing colleagues of shooting at unarmed Palestinians in need of aid, amid ongoing humanitarian crises.
A former security contractor employed by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has made shocking allegations regarding the treatment of hungry Palestinians at aid distribution sites backed by the US and Israel. Speaking anonymously to the BBC, the contractor reported witnessing colleagues fire upon civilians, including vulnerable groups of women, children, and the elderly. The disturbing incidents occurred when aid seekers were reportedly moving too slowly away from the GHF sites, which emerged in late May following an extensive blockade of Gaza.During various incidents, the contractor recounted guards opening fire from watchtowers with machine guns. In one instance, he noted laughter from colleagues after a guard shot a Palestinian man who fell motionless. The GHF defended its operations, dismissing the allegations as baseless and labeling the former contractor as “disgruntled,” despite the contractor presenting evidence of leaving his position on amicable terms. The GHF, which asserts that its aim is to deliver aid directly and efficiently, has faced widespread criticism for compelling thousands of Palestinians to traverse perilous, combat-active zones only to retrieve limited assistance. Since GHF's inception, over 400 Palestinians have reportedly been killed by Israeli forces while attempting to secure much-needed supplies, highlighting the dire circumstances faced by the millions in Gaza. The former contractor described a disturbing culture of impunity, lacking clear engagement protocols, and alleged a belief among some within GHF that the lives of Gazan people held no value. He portrayed an environment where the use of force was commonplace, stating, “If you feel threatened, shoot – shoot to kill and ask questions later.” In addition to gunfire, he shared further accounts of dangerous conditions at GHF sites, including the misuse of stun grenades and pepper spray against aid seekers, resulting in serious injuries. Such claims are corroborated by local reports and are leading international NGOs like Oxfam and Save the Children to demand the deconstruction of GHF's operations. As reports emerge about the unyielding violence in Gaza, the Israeli military maintains that its actions aim to mitigate Hamas's influence, asserting that the GHF's approach circumvents aid misuse by armed groups. However, the humanitarian situation remains dire, with staggering death tolls reported since the onset of military actions following the attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023.With these pressing issues under scrutiny, the urgent need for accountability and thorough investigation into GHF’s operations becomes more apparent as the humanitarian crisis escalates for the people of Gaza.
